More Charts
I’ve attached links to examples of the charts we’ll be using in Earl. Not all the functionality appears on these examples, nor is the data and tooltips associated with each chart built into these versions. This is just to give you an idea of the files I’ve developed for this portion of the project. More is on the way from Brad and Jesse.

Radar Chart →
THE RADAR CHART IS AN OVERLAPPING DISPLAY OF DATA DERIVED FROM PARTICIPANTS ASSIGNING A QUALITY RATING TO EACH URL THEY’VE SUBMITTED TO THE SYSTEM. BASED ON A SIMPLE 1 FOR LOW, 5 FOR HIGH NUMBERING SYSTEM; THIS IS THE ONLY SUBJECTIVE PORTION OF EARL AND IS STRICTLY GOVERNED BY THE PARTICIPANT’S EMPIRICAL DATA RATHER THAN HARD NUMBERS.

Blended Charts →
BASED ON DATA DERIVED FROM THE RADAR CHART, THE BLENDED CHARTS ARE A SERIES OF INTERACTIVE DISPLAYS ALLOWING FOR A CLOSER INSPECTION OF SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PARTICIPANTS. USING THE SAME 5 POINT NUMBER SYSTEM PREVIOUSLY ESTABLISHED, EACH CHART IS A FOCUSED COMPARISON BETWEEN TWO USERS AND THEIR  RATINGS OF URLS THEY’VE SUBMITTED WITHIN THE SAME CATEGORY.

Pie Chart - 1 →
THE PIE CHART FUNCTIONS AS A QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE TO THE NUMBER AND CATEGORY OF URLS CURRENTLY SUBMITTED TO EARL. EXPRESSED AS SLICES OF “PIE;” EARL CURRENTLY SUPPORTS 11 SPECIFIC CATEGORIES.

THE BUBBLE CHART IS A VISUAL RENDITION OF 300 URLS  SUBMITTED BY EACH CURRENT PARTICIPANT. DATE IS SUB-DIVIDED INTO ROWS OF CATEGORIES, COLUMNS OF PARTICIPANTS AND DISPLAYED AS VARYING SIZES OF BUBBLES ALLOWING USERS TO COMPARE AND CONTRAST INFORMATION THROUGH HARD NUMBERS AND VISUAL CUES.

Bar Charts →
THE BAR CHARTS ARE A SERIES OF INTERACTIVE DISPLAYS COMPARING DATA FROM TWO CATEGORIES ACROSS FOUR PARTICIPANTS. MORE NARROW IN SCOPE THAN THE BUBBLE CHART, THE BAR CHARTS ALLOW FOR A MORE FOCUSED COMPARISON OF DATA.

Chart Explorations
As our team continues to develop our URL based comparison project, it’s been my task to explore a variety of charting methods and see how we could update their appearance from the old, standard corporate charts to something new and exciting. The attached pdf contains a timeline of my explorations of Bar Charts, Pie Charts, Blended Charts and Distribution Graphs. Rick
